Call to Arms is an enjoyable game that offers many engaging aspects and gets a lot of things right, yet doesn't come without its set of bugs.
I always prefer single player games to coop or multiplayer. I like the ability to go at my own pace and not have to coordinate a good time for a game session. So in regards to this review, I'll be focusing on the single player aspects of Call to Arms.
One thing to note is not all campaigns are available in the base game. Much like other games in the Men of War extended family, campaigns for certain factions are sold piecemeal or in deluxe or ultimate versions.
The US campaign examines a conflict in an unnamed Middle Eastern country against a "new-and-improved" insurgency. There's a decent mission variety in the campaign, ranging from small units inserted behind enemy lines to capturing sprawling urban areas block by city block. The interface will be familiar to anyone who has played a Men of War title and easily accessible to players of any other RTS.
Yet the major draw of Call to Arms is the ability to jump behind the rifle of any soldier or behind the wheel of any vehicle. The weapons are graphically very well done and expertly detailed. By a simple scroll of the mouse wheel, players can choose whether they want a first-person or third-person view. Curiously, not matter whether you're controlling a UCP-wearing Army grunt, a multicam-clad Ranger, or a Navy SEAL, in first person mode, the arm wielding the weapon is always shown wearing desert MARPAT.
The soldier animations leave something to be desired. The walking seems stilted and no matter which direction the soldier is headed, the legs move forward. Basic training includes Moon-walking apparently.
Most missions of the US campaign can be played while freely swapping between first/third-person and overhead view, save for one ill-advised mission where you're forced to remain in direct control of a single Abrams tank for the duration of the mission.
Vehicles are a highlight of the game. The iconic Humvee is fielded by US allies, and the new MATV takes its place alongside the venerable Bradley IFV and aforementioned Abrams. Seasoned BMPs and oft-reliable technicals provide support for the Russian and insurgent factions.
The campaigns (at least the US and GRM campaigns) are fully voiced, but at time you'd wish they weren't. Weapons fire and truck engines sound fine, but the voice acting is disappointing.
Finishing the campaign doesn't mean the end of the single player experience. Local skirmish mode includes a small handful of game modes to play against the AI. Domination and Combined Arms are your standard point capture modes, and each offer a wide range of units to field. Combined Arms mode allows you to call in a gunship later in the match. King of the Hill and Evacuation are fairly enjoyable if a bit contrived. Heroes mode can be skipped entirely; it's Call to Arms' version of team deathmatch in which each player controls a single soldier.
The maps themselves fall into two clear categories: Middle East or Eastern Europe. They remind me a lot of Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare's campaign locales. Nothing stands out, but that works both ways: nothing about the maps is terrible.
Over the hours I've played, I've had a fun time leading Ranger fire teams through a crumbling village, driving troop carriers along debris-riddled highways, and holding off waves of charging hostiles from behind the iron sights of an M240B. If you're looking at this game wondering what it offers for single player gamers, I hope this review has addressed whatever questions you may have had. As always, feel free to add your thoughts or share your experiences in the comments.
