Free The Guild 3 download review
First off, I would like to note that the game in it's current state does not deserve the "Mixed" recent reviews status, it should be at least "Very Positive" in my opinion. But let me explain a bit why I think it has been received as "Mixed" and why I think it's better than that.
I played the Guild 3 in it's early access state and it's 1.0 state, and I will say that in early access it was an inconsistent design mess. In 1.0, this changed however.
I think that the Guild 3 suffers from legacy of the Guild 2, a cult classic that despite it's buggy-ness was a gem in terms of it's concept and design. Because of this, the Guild 3 can not escape the nostalgia of players that played the Guild 2. Fair enough, so it's not as good as the Guild 2 then? Well, yes and no, it's just different, in good and bad ways.
Because of the legacy of the Guild 2, that players are going to keep comparing it against, I feel like I must for this reason also compare it to the Guild 2 in this review, as otherwise this review would be disconnected from the other reviews, and it would not grant any insight to the reason why this game is being reviewed the way it is.
So let's look at a couple of things starting with what the Guild 3 does better,
The UI is much cleaner than it was in the Guild 2, and it gives the Guild 3 a smoother UX. It could still be improved a bit more by having the tooltips be a bit more informative, as in, telling the player what worker stats certain jobs benefit from and vice versa show what the stats actually improve could be made more clear.
The controls are less buggy, more intuitive and once again gives it a smoother UX. The camera of the Guild 2 was horrendous in comparison and inputs would not always register or give unexpected results, the Guild 3 suffers from none of that, your inputs do exactly what you expect from them and are super easy to pick up on.
Though not as important for a game like this, the graphics are simply better in the Guild 3, but that is to be expected for a sequel and it's not overly good for a game in this day and age.
This is a tricky one, yes I'd say progression is better but also VERY different, which a lot of people might not like. The progression within the Guild 3 is all compressed into 1 interface (nice and clear), this makes it intuitive to pick up on what your goals should be. However in contrast to the Guild 2, the progression is your dynasty as a whole; the Guild 2 was more character centric. This on it's own isn't necessarily a good thing, I can see why a lot of people dislike the fact that it's less focused on the characters, as I too share that sentiment to a degree, some immersion is lost here. But from a management game perspective the way the dynastic progression is implemented, it's done very well. A clear and intuitive tree that you can use to unlock certain buildings, titles and features. The nodes and what they unlock are made in a clear, familiar and solid manner, making the UX once again an improvement over the Guild 2 in my opinion, but yes we lost some RPG immersion because of it.
I can't state enough how big of an improvement this is to the Guild 2, in the early access of the Guild 3, it was a very buggy and unstable game just like it's predecessor. However in 1.0 the Guild 3, is as stable as a 1.0 game has to be, I have played over 30 hours without encountering a single bug or had any crash. I plan to put in even more hours and I have no reason to believe this experience will change. Now this is where the Guild 2 really really did not do well, if we're all honest, even though we loved the concept and design of that game, it was buggy as hell and crashed multiple times an hour. Mods fixed this to some extend but that still would not get close to the Guild 3, 1.0.
Some things it does worse than the Guild 2,
--- RPG gameplay / immersion:
A lot of the character specific data has been turned into dynastic data, your relations/reputation with other characters, dynasties and cities/districts are shared for all your characters in the dynasty. Influence, money, unlocks and all that are dynastic too. Some of these already were dynastic in the Guild 2, but because now all of it is, some immersion in individual characters is lost hurting the overall RPG feel of the game in comparison. But as explained earlier I do feel like it benefits the overall progression within the game.
-- Stats and leveling:
Leveling up characters and increasing their stat points feels a bit bland in the Guild 3. And due to the lack of information in the tooltips it can be hard for new players to figure out what stats are good to upgrade in certain situations. It is also hard to tell how much an increase in stats yields you in efficiency of your characters when it comes to specific tasks. The bottom section of the character screen does a good job breaking down some abilities that are affected by stats, but does not go deep enough for specific actions the characters perform. Things like does pickpocketing benefit from stealth or dexterity or both is hard to figure out, does productivity help for pickpocketing and this is true for other jobs/actions too, it's hard to tell what stats/abilities benefit them.
In the Guild 2 classes were character based rather than unlocking business types through dynastic progression, this helped with character immersion. That aside however, some of the classes in the Guild 3 just don't feel as interesting as they were in the Guild 2, for example going down the clergy path will only ever allow you to own preacher hut businesses rather than owning churches or cathedrals, which just feels like a bit of a bummer. There are more examples like this that make some career paths feel a bit bland, though I do believe that this is something that could be improved over time.
Overall comparison / Verdict:
The Guild 3 does a lot of things right and better than it's predecessor, the overall UX has improved significantly, but the concept and design has suffered in certain areas, that is not to say however that there aren't any fun things to do in the Guild 3, you just need to break free from your nostalgia a bit if you've played the Guild 2. If you manage to do so, or if you are new to the Guild franchise you will find that this game is quite enjoyable in it's own right. It's just different, for better or for worse.
I would say that weighing the pros and cons against each other you're left with a comparison that sets the Guild 3 on an equal footing with the Guild 2 on how "good" it is, both just do better in certain areas and worse in others.
